I’m currently looking for software (web) development work, full time for an approximately three month period between now (June) and September/October 2018, ideally with an option to continue on a part-time basis thereafter. Interested? Get in touch by email.
Here’s a more detailed outline of my skills and work.
I’m a full-stack web developer, equally familiar with both Ruby- and Python-based technology stacks. I’m experienced in planning and implementing new features from scratch including user interface design and testing.
The most comprehensive example of my work out there is Green’s Dictionary of Slang Online. Have a look around; everything you see was entirely designed and built by me (in my spare time), from a Python backend processing, indexing, and rendering >100 MB of XML data, to an intuitive user interface for running complex search queries, used by historical linguists to investigate the history of words and phrases.
Besides engineering large applications, I’m also good at rapid prototyping of new ideas, for which I’ve won numerous awards at hack days, including from the UK Parliament for my ‘Blogs for MPs’ prototype and from the Guardian newspaper for ‘Follow Fan’ (a crowdsourced interview application), both in 2011.
From hack days and other work I’ve also gained experience in scraping data from websites and other sources.
I’m a confident and clear writer of English technical prose. The most recent example I’m proud of is my explanation of a method of implementing regular-expression search using JavaScript. I’ve also written a shorter description of Google’s PageRank algorithm which is involved in working out what order to show Google search results in, which I intend to expand upon soon, now that the patent on the algorithm has expired.
I’m a native speaker of English with fluent German understanding, writing, and speaking, used to working and living in a multilingual environment. I’m also confident with translation in either direction.
Languages I’m already familiar with are Python (Flask), Ruby (Rails/Sinatra), JavaScript, and naturally HTML, CSS, and related technologies. I’m also used to picking up new frameworks and programming languages quickly.
My location is Berlin, Germany, and for convenience I would prefer a company that can hire me from there and set me up with an employment contract to cover the tax and insurance paperwork for me. However, I would also be open to taking a remote or contractor position with the right company.
If you’re interested, please get in touch by email to discuss hiring me.
